From THE AUSTRALIAN:
Rusty leads a charm offensive
WHEN Russell Crowe walked on to the stage to host the Australian Film Institute awards on Saturday night, he had a special prop with him. The Oscar-winning actor placed an old-fashioned black telephone on a small table next to the podium and said in a fake Mexican accent: "Say hello to my little friend." It was a wry warning for winners to restrict their speeches to 45 seconds, or risk another phone-throwing incident.

As host of the annual AFIAs in Melbourne, Crowe warned talkative award winners they faced a phone-bashing if they spoke for too long at the televised ceremony.

Entertaining, but not a lot to Crowe about

Russell Crowe is one of the most respected actors in the world, but his music is ridiculed by punk bands and critics alike, essentially because he uses the money from the job that he is great at to fund the job that he always wanted - to be a rock star.

RUSTY TURNS ON CHARM
By MICHAEL BODEY
THE king of Australian cinema, Russell Crowe, held court yesterday, delivering his verdict on everything from the state of the local movie industry and his next film project to the future of his beloved South Sydney rugby league team.
He confirmed plans to star opposite Nicole Kidman in a Baz Luhrmann film next year. Asked what genre the film would be, he replied: "Magnificence, is that a genre?"
On the failed Eucalyptus project, he said: "With so much expectation, to do that film when the principal elements weren't in the right shape would have been massively damaging. It was not my decision and it was not through my actions the film closed down."

The 41-year-old star of Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind was set to perform earlier this year with fellow Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman in local film Eucalyptus. The production folded, but both are now set to star in a new Australian feature to be shot next year by Baz Luhrmann.

Good films are hard to find these days. Great films are beyond rare. Proof of Life, Russell Crowe's one-two punch of a deft kidnap and rescue thriller, is one of those rare gems. A taut drama laced with strong and subtle acting, an intelligent script, and masterful directing, together it delivers something virtually unheard of in the film industry these days, genuine motivation in a story that rings true. Universal sees its strategies succeeding
By Rachel Abramowitz
With kudos raining down on "Brokeback Mountain," "The Producers," Rachel Weisz, Russell Crowe and Steven Spielberg, the bounty suggests that big business hasn't yet managed to kill off all intelligence in Hollywood. The films honored have ranged from the political ("Munich," "The Constant Gardener") to the culturally risky ("Brokeback Mountain") to the entertaining ("Pride & Prejudice," "King Kong").

From THE AUSTRALIAN:
Oz stars tussle for Globes
By Peter Mitchell
TWO versatile Australian actors playing archetypal heroes from the American cinema, albeit unconventional ones, have been nominated for Golden Globe awards in the same category.
Heath Ledger and Russell Crowe will go head to head for best actor honours at next month's Golden Globes, the awards seen as a forerunner to the Academy Awards.
Crowe was nominated for his heart-wrenching performance as boxer James Braddock in Cinderella Man, while Ledger gives a gritty portrayal of a queer cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. It confirms Ledger's place as a frontrunner for the best actor Oscar.

Gladiator related:
from THE NY TIMES:
The Pride and Terror of Those Who Fought to the Death
By William Grimes
... Russell Crowe in Roman times, would not have fought a gladiator and a tiger simultaneously as he does in "Gladiator." Even in Rome at its most barbaric, there was a right way and a wrong way to throw a man to the beasts.

Italy is very proud and honoured to have such a genius here. A terrific director, a poetic and ironic camera story teller, a magnificent writer and a gorgeous musician, a 360° artist.
A director who, with his masterly eye, can transform into pure art even the shot of a rubbish heap, laying on his beloved town curbs. A man who knows how to make poetry of his own idiosyncrasies, with an elegant auto-ironc taste.
Come back soon Woody, 'cause, never forget that we all need eggs... Sabry

Elton John wedding related:
from smh.com.au:
Here come the grooms, eager to tie knot
HE WAS, it seemed, straight in the '60s, bisexual in the '70s and straight again in the '80s, when he married a music engineer, Renate Blauel. In the '90s he was finally, unabashedly gay. And, in the noughties, Elton John has emerged as Britain's second most famous married queen.

From smh.com.au:
Oscars, schmoscars for 2005
The Alpha Male Award goes to Russell Crowe for a year that involved Eucalyptus collapsing, an arrest in New York, embracing fatherhood with a second baby reportedly on the way, a terrific movie that disappointed at the box office in Cinderella Man, filming another one with Ridley Scott in France, performing with a new band, making an offer for a rugby league club, hosting both the craft and main ceremonies at the Australian Film Institute Awards and being nominated for a Golden Globe. Apart from all that, it was an uneventful year.

From smh.com.au:
We've waited since 1974 and now they tell us we can't get tickets
...So, Russell Crowe wants the Rabbitohs to emulate Collingwood. Well, according to Eddie McGuire, the Collingwood club is very successful because it has record numbers of members, high attendances, made $2.5 million profit last year, has the best facilities in the AFL, won silver at the 2006 Australian Direct Marketing awards. But its football team came second-last. Yes, Russell... (on 2nd page)
