From THE AUSTRALIAN:
Rusty leads a charm offensive
WHEN Russell Crowe walked on to the stage to host the Australian Film Institute awards on Saturday night, he had a special prop with him. The Oscar-winning actor placed an old-fashioned black telephone on a small table next to the podium and said in a fake Mexican accent: "Say hello to my little friend." It was a wry warning for winners to restrict their speeches to 45 seconds, or risk another phone-throwing incident.

RUSTY TURNS ON CHARM
By MICHAEL BODEY
THE king of Australian cinema, Russell Crowe, held court yesterday, delivering his verdict on everything from the state of the local movie industry and his next film project to the future of his beloved South Sydney rugby league team.
He confirmed plans to star opposite Nicole Kidman in a Baz Luhrmann film next year. Asked what genre the film would be, he replied: "Magnificence, is that a genre?"
On the failed Eucalyptus project, he said: "With so much expectation, to do that film when the principal elements weren't in the right shape would have been massively damaging. It was not my decision and it was not through my actions the film closed down."

CROWE FLIES STRAIGHT
By
Daniel Ziffer
OSCAR-WINNING actor Russell Crowe is in Melbourne doing his bit to boost the shaky state of the local film industry.
"I think, as always, wonderful films come out of it and wonderful stories are being told, but I think film is a delicate and complicated medium," he said.
The 41-year-old star of Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind was set to perform earlier this year with fellow Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman in local film Eucalyptus. The production folded, but both are now set to star in a new Australian feature to be shot next year by Baz Luhrmann.

Good films are hard to find these days. Great films are beyond rare. Proof of Life, Russell Crowe's one-two punch of a deft kidnap and rescue thriller, is one of those rare gems. A taut drama laced with strong and subtle acting, an intelligent script, and masterful directing, together it delivers something virtually unheard of in the film industry these days, genuine motivation in a story that rings true.
